Detailed Itinerary

10:00 AM - Hotel Pick-up

  • Your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel to begin your journey into the deeper historical and geological sites of southern Cappadocia.

Stop 1: Kaymakli or Derinkuyu Underground City

  • Activity: Explore a multi-level subterranean city.

  • Experience: You will descend into one of the largest and deepest underground cities, carved deep into the volcanic rock. Your guide will show you stables, churches, wine presses, storage rooms, and ventilation shafts, explaining how thousands of people lived hidden from persecution for months at a time. (Note: Which city you visit can depend on tour operator scheduling and crowd management).

Stop 2: Ihlara Valley (Canyon)

  • Activity: A scenic hike through a deep canyon.

  • Experience: Formed by the Melendiz River, this 14km-long canyon is a stunning oasis with sheer rock walls and a river running through it. Your hike (typically a 3-4 km section on a well-maintained path) will take you past numerous hidden rock-cut churches from the Byzantine era, many with still-visible frescoes. The cool air and sound of the river make this a refreshing part of the day.

Lunch: Belisirma Village

  • Activity: Enjoy a traditional Turkish lunch.

  • Experience: You will stop at one of the restaurants in Belisirma village, uniquely built on platforms over the flowing Melendiz River. This is one of the most picturesque lunch spots in all of Cappadocia.

Stop 3: Selime Monastery

  • Activity: Explore the largest rock-cut monastery in the region.

  • Experience: This is a final, breathtaking highlight. You will climb up to and explore this massive complex, which includes a gigantic cathedral-sized church, a kitchen with a large chimney, monastic quarters, and stables all carved into the rock. The panoramic views of the surrounding valley from the top are incredible.

Late Afternoon - Hotel Drop-off

  • After a full day of exploration, you will be driven back to your hotel. The drop-off time is typically around 6:00 PM but can vary based on the pace of the group.

Key Information & Tips for the Green Tour

  • What to Wear: Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are non-negotiable. The paths in Ihlara Valley can be uneven, and Selime involves some climbing.

  • What to Bring:

    • A small backpack for water and layers.

    • Plenty of water, especially for the hike.

    • Sunscreen and a hat (though parts of the valley are shaded).

    • Camera.

    • Cash for personal expenses.

  • Physical Difficulty: Moderate to Active. This tour involves a significant amount of walking, descending and ascending stairs (especially in the underground city), and climbing at Selime Monastery. It may not be suitable for those with claustrophobia (in the underground city) or significant mobility issues.

  • Lunch: The riverside lunch in Belisirma is a fixed-menu meal typically included in the tour price. It's a wonderful experience.

This itinerary is perfect for those interested in the deep history, geology, and wanting a more active experience beyond the fairy chimneys. Enjoy your adventure
