Stop 1: Kaymakli or Derinkuyu Underground City

Experience: You will descend into one of the largest and deepest underground cities, carved deep into the volcanic rock. Your guide will show you stables, churches, wine presses, storage rooms, and ventilation shafts, explaining how thousands of people lived hidden from persecution for months at a time. Stop 2: Ihlara Valley (Canyon)

Experience: Formed by the Melendiz River, this 14km-long canyon is a stunning oasis with sheer rock walls and a river running through it. Your hike (typically a 3-4 km section on a well-maintained path) will take you past numerous hidden rock-cut churches from the Byzantine era, many with still-visible frescoes. You will climb up to and explore this massive complex, which includes a gigantic cathedral-sized church, a kitchen with a large chimney, monastic quarters, and stables all carved into the rock. The panoramic views of the surrounding valley from the top are incredible.
